Music Licensing
DJ Ben Holden handles scripting, voiceover, production, and delivery. Music licensing for your phone system is your responsibility — here's what you need to know.
Your service includes scripting, DJ voiceover, audio production, editing, and final audio file delivery. Every track is custom-written and produced specifically for your business.
What it does not include: music licenses. The underlying songs used in your hold music production may be subject to performance licensing requirements depending on how and where they are played.
Your Responsibility
When music is played on a business telephone system, it may be considered a "public performance" under copyright law, which typically requires a license from one or more performing rights organizations (PROs).
One of the three major U.S. PROs. If the songs in your hold music are ASCAP-licensed, you may need an ASCAP blanket license for business use.
The other major U.S. PRO. Many popular songs are BMI-licensed. Business licenses are available directly through BMI.
A smaller but significant PRO, particularly for certain country and gospel catalogs. May be relevant depending on your genre selection.
The Easy Way Out
If the licensing question feels overwhelming, the simplest solution is to request royalty-free music when you place your order. Royalty-free tracks carry no ongoing licensing requirements — you pay once (or it's included with your order) and you're done.
Just select "Royalty-Free" as your genre preference on the order form and we'll select appropriate tracks that fit your business's tone and style — no licensing paperwork, no PRO fees.

Your phone system provider may already have a licensing arrangement in place — it's worth asking them before purchasing a separate license. Many hosted PBX and VoIP providers include music licensing as part of their hold music feature.
When in doubt, consult an entertainment attorney or contact the PROs directly — ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC all have small business licensing departments and straightforward rate structures for hold music use.
